Xanthus Wrote:Yeah, I'm going to put a FlashChat module on the website, as opposed to IRC, as the IRC modules aren't quite as nice, and cost more money. FlashChat is only $5 and is our very own chat system, as opposed to relying on dalnet.
For me, browser based chats = hatred. I have an IRC client and am on IRC anyway, which made it easy to just pop into the channel. So with the browser-based, non-IRC-accessible chat, you probably won't be seeing much of me on it (not that I'm indespensible or anything XD).

I guess I should have gotten my voice in here sooner. I know someone who had an IRC webchat on her site; I'll ask her about it, in case you're still interested in having IRC. (There are other servers than Dal, y'know.)

We'd also prefer IRC but won't rule out FlashChat 'til we've tried it.

For the record, PHPBB does have a Flash-based IRC client for those who don't want to download one, IIRC. (otherkin.com uses it)

I will look into that, too, then. Most of the IRC browser clients I'd looked at were either: a) crap, or b) EXPENSIVE.

It's IRC, so c) crack it if it's expensive <!-- sTongue --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- sTongue -->.

Re: So, I'm making the website!
Is a browser client a big benefit, anyway? Serious question, not a rhetorical or biased one. We always use the IRC client in Trillian and get annoyed by the browser client, but if others do consider it important, then it definitely needs to be factored into the decision.

Re: So, I'm making the website!
My friend says she has the code for the browser-based IRC client. IMO -all- browser-based clients are crappy, because they annoy me, but I've used more annoying ones in a pinch. Honestly, if you use the chat for an extended period of time, you're likely to get an actual IRC client just for more functionality (because NO browser-based client has more functionality than a standalone one, whatever you do).

The Garnet Host: The benefit is that anyone can pop into the chat if they feel like it, straight from their browser, even if they've never used IRC or ANY chat before. Like I said, though, if they decide to stick around, they will probably get their own client.

A webclient and encouragement to get their own client, even if just to give them other options to access the chat (I hate browser clients and prefer mIRC just like some people hate mIRC and prefer Trillian) might be a good idea. Plus the option to use a standalone client = more features that browser-based clients don't provide, like aliases. More options, more features = good!

Edit: Oh, and the one my friend has is free. She can get the code for me whenever, if you'd like to see it.

I don't think 'Hoku would appreciate illegal software on his webserver. <!-- sTongue --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- sTongue -->

you're right, xanthus, that's something i wouldn't like. i may be a fan of free software, but only if it's distributed as such. many people forget that programming is hard work, and not every programmer does it as a hobby.

I like the subtle shade and the pattern, but green reminds me of elementals, nature spirits and elves. I agree with Kayako in that shades of blues would be preferred. And if you need opposite colors to stand out, white usually works just fine. As would a pale shade of yellow for the text.

Also, if you want help with a background image, I can create something from scratch for you to use. Just let me know if I can help.
