Sorry, I didn't make myself clear - I was saying something very different.
The forums I know of that have had an adult section did indeed have lively and useful R rated discussions (not just on sexual topics either - there is a lot more than sex which is not considered suitable for 13 year olds, at least on this side of the Atlantic).
However, a main cause for concern from forum owners tends to be "no way, it will degenerate into porn!" I have never seen that happen. I have never seen the adult section of an otherwise sensible kin forum cross the line - certainly talk about subjects that would not be appropriate around children, but definitely remain appropriate for an adult forum.
The other main cause for concern seems to be causing some kind of split. In my experience adult sections have low traffic - and if people are posting things there which are not adult in nature, it's very simple for admin staff to point this out and move them to a public section. As it stands, there isn't a "split" as such, but every adult on the forum who wants to talk about an adult issue is constantly minded that everything they post must be suitable for a 13 year old child to read.
The last issue often raised against an adult section is the difficulty of policing it. The simplest way is a tickbox confirming you are over 18. Yes, people will lie - but that fulfills whatever tiny legal duty of care you have. To be more complicated, you could only allow people to join it who can, say, email confirmation from their work or university email address (as not many minors will have such a thing, but most adults will).
