Kreyas, that's fair. But as I've mentioned Otherkin come under a lot of fire too in many venues. I just don't think we have the room to talk about any other group when we know what its like to be consitered "weird" or "deviant" or "insane" or "delusional". We know what its like to be discounted for what be beleive and choose to live so then why would we do it to another group? And yes I am compairing the two groups becuase Otherkin often get classified by the random weird fluffy idiots, not the normal, average otherkin same as furries.

Weird is simply something outside socially accepted norms. I don't see it as an insult. Just because you are Otherkin (thus, weird, just like me) doesn't necessitate that you think a guy pulling an airplane with cables attached to his ears should be considered perfectly normal.

But I don't think said person should be bashed for it either, especially by someone who's just as "weird" I'm not saying its normal, just shouldn't be scoffed by people who aren't normal either. Besides, some of those Fursuits are quite well designed/ put together from an artistic standpoint. The people who make them have sewing and anamatronic game <3.
Most true furries aren't furverts, like those you've encountered Kreyas. However, the furverts are the most vocal/easily recognised. Just as many people who like anime won't attend a con, and certainly don't watch hentai, so there are many furries who are quietly and creatively expressing an interest/hobby. Furrydom does not entail nothing but a fetish afterall.

And again, cosplay at a convention is pretty damn common. Be it Xena, Star Wars, Star Trek, Anime, or yes, anthro animals, there will be a great many people in costume. It's like the ren faire. As I said earlier, it's fun, it's silly, and its like being a kid again.

We weren't initially going to answer this because it's targeted toward the dragon community, but with others jumping in and us discussing, hey, why not...

1. A mixed bag of roleplayers, wishers, totemists, and therians, not necessarily all recognizing that the relevant labels apply to them. Generally good people in our experience, but then we don't go looking into the community much so we don't so much have furry friends, as we have friends happen to be furs.

2. Too much exposure to noisy extremists, not enough exposure to awesome people like our honorary brother the wolf, who was actually the inspiration for me to even consider that I might not be human, and who manages to have an attraction to anthros without expressing it to others in a way that makes us want to bleach our eyes.

We assumed for a long time that he considered himself a wolf therian, but some of his recent comments make it sound like he's doubting or simply furry. We still think he really is one, even if he thinks he's just played too much Werewolf...but therian or not, he's still definitely furry.

I'll start off by saying that as default, I tend to ignore the labels given to any group of people, keeping my judgment for individuals. Having not met any in real life I'm aware of, I have to base my opinions of the culture as a whole from word of mouth and what I see online.

That said, I still hold no particular feelings for them one way or the other. Generally I find the art incredible and much more attractive to look at than with human subjects. The costumes I generally brush off, but some I find surprisingly well-built mechanically. I personally just wouldn't wear such a thing outside of Halloween or similar. As far as role-play goes, I'm always open for it but rarely use a dragon. I also firmly draw the line in the event it starts going on to more sexual topics.

So in short, My feelings about the culture amounts to "*Shrug* so what?"
To explain my nuke comment earlier:

When I hear of furries, what comes to my mind is the only exposure to it I’ve actually had, which Kreyas went over very well on page two. Meeting people who have it as a sexual fetish and are very insistent to convert me, especially since I already think I’m a dragon so I should totally love that stuff *blah*

So my introduction was to furries who did just that. And even after, when exposed to them on the internet, that’s the main trait that furries had. So that’s where my initial assumption of disagreement and sometimes disgust comes from.

When it comes to just appreciating the "Anthro animals look cool" bit, I’m perfectly fine with that. I actually haven’t considered (and still don’t consider) that to be under the furry umbrella I have come to know and dislike. Appreciating something for it’s artistic value and turning it into a sexual fetish that’s being needlessly shoved in my face are two different things in my book.

And the idea that cause I have a quirk means that I shouldn’t have room to talk about another’s different quirk doesn’t mean I can’t still express my distaste at something which I find offensive. With that argument, no one has the right to criticise anyone ever because everyone has something a bit off about them.
And sorry to sound like the bigoted conservative here, but there are quite a few things out there which need a good criticising for some damn good reasons. And no one can argue that they don’t do just that, cause sure as hell they have and still will.
Not a dragon, but I'm awesome, so I'll make you guys suffer my thoughts. SUFFER.

Personally, I have no problem with the furry community. I don't even have a problem with the furverts... sexual deviance is fascinating to me. And frankly, I really like anthro art. I'll pass on the pr0n, but the rest of it is pretty neat. But I would get extremely ripped up if someone called me a furry, and did, as a matter of fact. Coming out of the kin closet heraleded one cunt that inferred furriness from my spiritual belief. The only one, mind you, which I think says more about her than me, but whatever.

As to why I think people hate the community so much... yeah, just what Prince said. People feel big when they've got a minority to pick on.

I chose my fursona because it represented subtle, normally hidden, parts of myself in a fun and cute fashion.

I'm pretty closeted about my furriness because I don't need anyone to feel the way I do. I don't even need anyone to know the way I feel.
