Re: need help
Welcome to the board. We ask everyone to post an introduction; please make sure you put that in the Introductions section as your next post. I know you already gave a little bit of an introduction here but it helps both the mods and the other members notice that someone new has arrived and to easily locate a little information about you.

To answer your question, unfortunately kintype - or whether a person is 'kin at all - doesn't follow a checklist. People here may be able to give you suggestions about what kintypes to look into or ways to find out more about yourself but that's all we can do.

The things you describe, other than communicating with a succubus, are within the range of normal human characteristics. I wouldn't suggest dismissing them entirely; just consider whether there are mundane explanations for them and weigh that against any evidence you find for being non-human to some extent.

Could you tell us more about the succubus? Specific details could be important. How did you meet her? How reliable of a source do you think she is, and why do you think so? What precisely did she say, as well as you remember?

I hope you enjoy it here and find some of the members' suggestions and observations useful. ^_^

Re: need help
I'd say look into seals and selkies. If any of these attributes are directly tied into your kin-ness, I'd say that selkies, being seal-fey and living in colder water, and mundane seals themselves, would be a good place to start. Even if you are not a seal or selkie, you might find something that fits or read something that leads somewhere.

Also, consider you might not be kin that is named on this world. You might be a creature or entity that doesn't exist here or interact with this plain often, so you may not find a name in a text book or mythology.

Good luck on your search.

Re: need help
You know it seems to matter what a person lists one usually always gets the answer that it all falls within normal human behaviour . Might one ask what aside from feeling phantom body parts does suggest otherkin then ?

[IMO and from what I can find] Otherkin is feeling that you are some way intrinsically(I hope that's the right word) non-human (spiritually or psychologically or both). This does not go towards physical characteristics since we are all human physically.

The only "non-human" aspect of me, the only sign or symptom, is that my energy is shadow flavoured rather than human flavoured. I believe that this in turn has some effects on my day to day life - but all those effects could be caused by many other things and as such they are not indicitive of being otherkin. The only relevant thing useful in determining whether or not I am otherkin is that my energy is that of a shadow. (I'm a multiple, so that could cloud things - but his identity and mine are separate, so I don't really think it does.)

If you don't believe in energy or different species having different energies, then obviously the above doesn't help much. But in that case I think it would be huuuuugely important to decide what you mean by "otherkin", anyway.

Everything you have listed is well within the bounds of normal human experience.

Why is it that you think you could be otherkin in the first place? You could be asking if you're just a bit of an oddball, if you're just a normal but introspective person, or it have you some kind of innate talent at magic of some kind. But instead you're asking if you aren't human, and if not, what kind.

So what has caused you to look to being otherkin as an explanation for your quirks? Why do you feel they need an explanation at all?

My system agrees with the "different flavored energy" answer from Archer, for the most part. Humans can have a strong elemental affinity that affects their flavor or consume enough of a certain type of energy to take on its qualities - like eating something and getting garlic breath - especially if they're psychic vampires. It's worth checking for potential sources of the flavoring before concluding that this is an intrinsic property of the person's energy.

Other than that, it's very subjective to us; the subtle body can be altered so that one feels phantom body parts that have grown in this lifetime (and unconscious thought or wishing can affect that, not just deliberate intent) and we've read enough studies on memory to know that it's very unreliable.

We still question ourselves and double-check our thoughts and behaviors against what we might have been conditioned to think and do during this lifetime. We also consider it entirely possible that we came up with the whole thing as an allegory for things in this lifetime, so it's a good thing we believe that simply being psychologically Other is good enough. <!-- sSmile --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- sSmile -->

It's largely a judgment call, and being honest with oneself about whether simpler explanations could fit. We consider the latter very important, though.

Re: need help
Further, part of the whole "Why are you even here?" thing is fundamental - and that's if there are no problems and nothing you want to do about being otherkin, it really doesn't even matter.

That I am a shadow matters only in that it has an effect on some energy work I do, and that it (I hope) allows me to help out other shadowy people with a little more ease. I have other reasons for caring about this, and they would still be there even if I was 100% human.

If everything is fine and dandy and perfect, it really doesn't matter if you're an elf or a dragon or something else entirely. Likewise, if you have some kind of traumatic past life memory that you need to work through, it really doesn't matter what shape or colour your skin was when that memory was laid down - what matters is the content. Even if it's some kind of need to find "your own kind" then putting a label on yourself certainly won't help that, because "your own kind" are people you share understanding and respect with . . . not just people who's only similarity to you is choosing the same label.

So, in my opinion, "Why did you even think about not-being-human at all?" and "Why do you actually care what species your soul is?" are much, MUCH more important questions than "What kind of otherkin are you?"
