What kind of critter makes these marks on trees?

It's been suggested that it could be a boring worm, and while researching those I found out about the emerald ash borer, which makes similar marks...but the pictures we saw of its work have more space between the curves. I'm not sure what kind of tree this is, but it's in the right area for the EAB - Oakland County, MI, along the Clinton River.

It's kind of bugging me, no pun intended, to pin it down; the trees are in a place that's personally significant and beetles are personally significant.
