Trans-species
This always seems to be a hot topic so I thought I'd bring it up here! <!-- sBig Grin --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- sBig Grin --> What do you think of the term 'trans-species'? As a therian (or anyother other otherkin, really) would you apply it to yourself? And what do you think are the pros and cons of using this term?

Re: Trans-species
I think it doesn't exactly apply...makes me think of someone who's part human and part animal...in a physical sense, like a mermaid.

Re: Trans-species
I wouldn’t necessarily use the term. The term ‘trans’ tend to demote ‘transitioning’ to me. And while that can be thankfully done for one’s physical sex, it can’t truly be done for species. So I don’t think it really applies to therians as a general whole.

Re: Trans-species
I don't think it's really accurate. I see trans used to indicate transitioning/transforming or transcending something, and that's not exactly what therians do. I suppose if we had the technology to make ourselves more visibly like our kin-types it might be more appropriate.

That's clever, but it's turtles all the way down.

Re: Trans-species
The term makes me think of the term "transgender," someone of one gender stuck in the body of a different gender. So Tans-species makes me think of one species stuck in the body of another species. So it works for me as a synonym for therianthrope, but I probably wouldn't use it without first defining it.

Re: Trans-species
The current theory in regards to transsexualism is connected to the brain-gender theory.
There's a small part of the hypothalamus which is considered to be connected with gender identity.
This part has been found to be the same in trans-women and cissexual women.

It's a "brain/body" mismatch, not a soul/body mismatch.

Some therians would argue that their being a therian is not actually spiritual in nature, but rather is a result of different brain-wiring. Those same folks have compared their therianism to autism and other autism spectrum disorders. Just wanted to point out that not all therians subscribe to the wrong soul/body/spiritual belief.

Re: Trans-species
Some therians consider it psychological, not spiritual, as well.
But until the "species identity" part of the brain has been discovered and some signs are found that it's the same in wolves and wolf therians (or equiv.), I am disinclined to use "trans-species".

I agree that I'm just not into using transspecies; it just doesn't roll off the tongue like therian does. *shrug* I understand the idea behind the term, it does have the "trans" like transgender, but transspecies implies being born into the wrong species. Which I guess applies to therians, but it seems to also imply an ability to change your species, which we cannot.
