Tech trouble!
I think something is screwing with my computer. Probably a virus, but McAfee can't find anything. Half the time my clicks don't work (on everything but Firefox, Firefox is apparently awesome and thus unaffected), and sometimes my folders take on a totally different look! Oh and, I can't get into my email inbox through MSNIM anymore. Fracking fragle.

I'm pissed. I was going to try system restore to go back two days (this didn't start till then but I have no clue what I did), but I heard that some viruses can hide in system restore, so I'm scared to do that in case it makes it worse.

So I'm probably going to have to go get my comp serviced somewhere, after I just got my new fancy net stuff set up, or buy a new PC entirely. At the moment, I'm hassling trying to put all of my good pics onto my photobucket, because, of course, my comp won't bring up the window thing when I insert a disc to attempt to burn the files.

Can any of you tech folks help me out here? I'm seriously at the end of my rope. I know very little about these sorts of things....

But aren't you a software company that builds tech support software? Jk, but I do like the irony .

Well it's hard to get worse with a system restore. I always give that a shot whenever something catastrophic happens. If you have a virus that hides in one of those files... the worst that can happen is you still have the virus you have right now.

In addition to a virus scan, you may wish to do a spyware scan as spyware is far more prevalent.

When I do a spyware scan, I download Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. I then restart into safe mode (what version of Windows are you using?) to run them. Running them in normal Windows may not be entirely effective.

Once you do that and everything starts acting normal (but slow)... I'd recommend defragmenting your hard drive.

I also really recommend ad Aware; I've had excellent results with it.

If you get your hands on an anti-virus later on, a really good one I recommend is symantec corporate edition. There are... many ways of getting it, so if you're looking for it I'm sure you can find it. It's very good and in the few years I've been using it, I've never had any issues with it. Very easy to run and maintain.

Basically; what Kreyas said :3

I'll try system restore first....but I won't do it until my mother comes over tomorrow, I think. I *hate* doing things like that when no one else is around....I don't know why.

I also don't want to try anything until she's here because then, in the event of a catastrophe, she can help me re-setup my school computer so I can at least do my homework....

Re: Tech trouble!
Ad Aware and Avast are two programs that I used to clean up the mess there was on the boss' comp at work (flowershop).
Did the trick.
Both are free (privately at least).

ClamAV and AVG are legally free anti-viruses and both do a good job. I personally like ClamAV though since it seems easier to work with.

What can I say, I'm the geek that's anal about things being easy to use. Even spoke at a major conference in Ohio last September about making programs easier to use

Re: Tech trouble!
Wanna know what's weird? I restarted the com and now things seem to be working fine.......

But I won't say that it's fine just yet, I'm gonna wait and see if it messes up again. It might have just been that I messed something up while messing with my email. I've done it before....

*knocks wood on the bad thoughts*

Anyways, I've pinpointed another thing that could've caused things to mess up. I won't mention what it was just yet, because then I would have to name someone who I think is registered here, but I'm checking it out.
