Recommend me an anime!
So I keep thinking, I should take some kind of interest in anime. I mean it normally makes me go "ugh" but in the same way people who never saw Picard yell "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!" go "ugh" at Star Trek, cos I mean, there's gotta be some awesome stuff out there.

I've seen some Cowboy Bebop and like it, so it's on the list. On the subject of animation aimed at adults (though not Japanese) I also really like Samurai Jack. The only other probably-adult non-comedy show I remember seeing is Clone Wars which struck me as a bit "meh".

I like science fiction settings, character development, urban decay, and reality bending.

I dislike sword and sorcery fantasy, ridiculous huge eyes, "cute" things, and mechas.

Sooooo, any suggestions? I'm also pondering Spirited Away, but other than that and Cowboy Bebop I have no real ideas. And the anime section of my local DVD store is confusing and overwhelming, heh.

I've been told to obtain Elfen Lied.
It sounds awesome.
Which is more than I'd say about, well, "ANY!" other anime.
Might suit your needs.
Wikipedia it at least.

Oooh oooh oooh!!!

*bounces on her toes and gleefully claps hands*

Watch these in this order to maximize the viewing experience(s).

1. Code Geass
2. Last Exile
3. Death Note
4. xxxHolic (a mild relief from all the seriousness, I suppose)
5. Trigun
6. Darker than Black

CG and LE are my favourites. ^_^

I was about to go "OH NO IT BURNS MY EYES" when I realised the first Wikipedia picture was from the manga, heh. The animated art looks much more palatable. It's on the list.

1. Code Geass

Looks like mechas, and I hate mechas

Quote:2. Last Exile

Scanning Wikipedia for story info without spoilerising myself it didn't really inspire, but I rather like steampunk, and it looks a bit steampunky, so it's on the list.

Quote:3. Death Note

High school students, ugh. Didn't much enjoy watching shows about them even when I was that age <!-- sTongue --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- sTongue -->

Quote:4. xxxHolic (a mild relief from all the seriousness, I suppose)

Does Japan have no there no protagonists over the age of 30????

Quote:5. Trigun

Space western! Amnesia! Adults! On the list, looks good.

Quote:6. Darker than Black

Hmm, doesn't grab me at all, though that might just be Wikipedia not really getting the point.

So the shortlist now stands at Elfen Lied, Last Exile, and Trigun.

Googling threw up Perfect Blue, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell . . . any thoughts?

Re: Recommend me an anime!
I haven't watched Akira, but the opinion of a friend with excellent taste suggests that it is a must-see.

As for Code Geass... the mechas are extremely minor to the plot. It's actually an overarching political intrigue involving what may or may not be mind-control powers .

Death Note only has three characters who are easily viewable as teenagers; the adults are extremely plot-significant, and by the end of the first season, the main character is in his twenties.

xxxHolic's deuteragonist is actually closer to 900 years old and appears to be roughly 35.

XD I'm not making excuses, just... I hope you don't completely give up on CG and DN. They're in the top ten of best-written and best-designed anime in the history of the genre.

Re: Recommend me an anime!
ANIME. DO WANT.

I would recommend:

Death Note (rated 12/15, depends on the episode). A short, fairly recent anime, and is very interesting and disturbing at times, despite some plot holes.

Elfen Lied (rated 15). Another short anime, extremely gory but not disturbing.

Seen a bit of the Cowboy Bebop TV series, looks OK.

Akira and Ghost in the Shell are ones I really want to see.

We rather enjoyed Akira, it is one that we'd also strongly recommend you read the manga if you enjoy it once you have watched it. There is a lot of stuff that did not make it into the movie. We have watched some of Ghost in the Shell and need to get around to watching that completely and in order.

Not sure to what extent Bubble Gum Crisis will hit the anti-Mecha rule...... and just because we feel like throwing it into the mix there is also Astro Boy.

Re: Recommend me an anime!
I used to hate anime until someone turned me on to "the good stuff". My tastes do differ from yours, though. Nevertheless, here's my list:

Gen Ro, The Wolf Brigade - Hitchcockian suspense

Princess Mononke - very well done folk tale

Porco Rosha - a World War I tale, tongue in cheek

Ghost in the Shell - seems more your style

Wolf's Rain - the happy ending is rather depressing, though

Things like Vampire Hunter D, and Blood have their redeeming points.

And it's not Japanese, but I keep hearing about a movie being made of Blacksad and, if they don't completely massacre it, it'll be well worth the wait.

Re: Recommend me an anime!
BTW, Death Note is actually a psychological horror/thriller anime more so than a high school anime, and has loads of suspense.

Re: Recommend me an anime!
I would second Code Geass, there is Mecha in it but it's really not that important, there more of a side plot anyway. It's a very political anime and I absolutely fell in love with it when I first saw it. All hail Lelouch!

I would second Death Note as well. It is a psychological thriller between two geniuses, both of whom are kind of morally in the wrong. It's very interesting.

Wolf's Rain is a great anime, it was one of my first and I still love it regardless of how many times I have watched it in Japanese and English.

Princess Mononoke is a good one, it's tied with Spirited Away as my favorite Miyazake films.

Blood+ is a good anime. I can't really do it much justice so you should probably google it.

Mushishi is really interesting, although I'm not sure if it's what you are looking for, it's this guy who goes around helping people solve problems that are solved by creatures... not a very good description, I would probably google that one too.

Ultimately there is a LOT of anime out there, some really obscure so keep looking I guess.
