Information Otherkin terms and definitions
I thought it would be helpful, in the process of reviving this forum, to provide a list of helpful terms, and guidelines for newer members, who may be intimidated by having to dig through old archives of threads.

Basic Otherkin terms
Otherkin: Someone who considers themselves nonhuman in some way, be it mental (psychological), spiritual, etc.

Alterhuman: having an identity that is alternative to the common societal idea of 'human'; a person who identifies as such. A large umbrella term that applies to a wide range of experiences.

Therian: someone who identifies on an integral level as an animal that exists, or, existed, on this earth.

Fictionkin: Someone who believes themselves to be a fictional character, or, species on an integral level- spiritual, psychological, etc.

Fictotype: a fictional identity.

Kintype: A general term for the particular animal(s) or being(s) that a person sees them self as.

Theriotype: what therians use to refer to animal identities that exist on our earth.

Otherhearted, fictionhearted, otherkith, fictionkith: a series identities that refer to identifying with a species, animal, fictional character, etc., as opposed to identifying as one.

Awakening: The act of first discovering that there is something other than human about yourself. Not everyone who identifies as Otherkin experiences an awakening.

Shifting
Mental Shift: a state in which one is behaving, and thinking, most like their kintype/theriotype/fictotype/etc. would. This includes shifts in perception, thought patterns, etc.

Phantom shift: a state in which one's perception of one's body becomes more like their 'type's. For example, one may feel phantom wings, paws, hooves, claws, ears, etc.

Dream shifting: Dreams in which one appear as their 'type.

Astral shifting:when the the individual's soul takes the shape of their kintype's in the astral plane/in astral body.

Cameo Shifting: when an individual experiences a shift that is something other than their kintype(s).

Awakening – The act of first discovering that there is something other than human about yourself. Not everyone who identifies as Otherkin experiences an awakening.

I would also caveat the term "alterhuman" as being a new take on the older term "otherkin" and that not all 'kin use/prefer the newer term.

RE: Otherkin terms and definitions
Alterhuman is a rather broad term & though it encompasses otherkin & therians, it isn't synonymous with otherkin since it refers to a much broader array of experiences & identities--basically it's outside the 'typical' scope of being human. It also includes other-hearted, among various other experiences. https://alt-h.net/ For the definition & info on alterhumanity.
