Re: Maybe the community is scaring off potential newcomers...
I actually think the opposite of the word "believe."

I think that if we were to say that we think we are something different, it implies that it is false.

I think that if we were to say that we are something different, it is terribly presumptuous and totally without proof of any sort to back it up.

I think that if we were to say that we believe we are something different, it implies that we're of the belief that in some capacity we are something different, people believe in God, but are they ever truly "sure" of God's existence? Otherkin is no where near a religion, way to fractured and too broad a sense of ideas, rare is it to find a group that all believe the same thing, and in my experience when you do find a group of Otherkin who believe the same... they're nuts.

The maximum effective range of an excuse is zero meters.

Spanky Wrote:Hmm..I don't like the word "believe" because it implies a religious sort of thought process. Besides, a lot of us don't technically "believe" we are X in Y way...I've seen quite a few people say they weren't sure what to believe, and were constantly in doubt about what's 'real" and what isn't. "Belief" implies that one is sure of oneself.
ehm sry i meaned the word suppose but i couldnt remember it and was lazy so i used this word XD. Also belive is, that you think that you are otherkin, but cant prove it to yourself, because if you can prove it to yourself then you are knowing it, thats how believe works for me, anyway i dont think it must implies a religious sort of thought but i was rather suspecting it that it could take this corvensation in the way of what others think word believe mean <!-- sTongue --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!-- sTongue -->.

Edit: what Terro says is how i think about the word believe.

*sigh* I think someone needs to study the human brain a lot more, so we can actually have a base for what's "human" and be able to define what is "not".

1) I'm shocked that people here don't use the word "incongruent" in everyday conversation
2) "Believe" doesn't really imply anything about truth or falseness; one can believe something that is incorrect, or believe something that is correct (kids, this is why "I believe such-and-such" is very handy to say should the police ever question you under caution)
3) The opening post about believing we have unicorn souls or whatever . . . if this site ever says anything remotely like that, please just shoot me now

Agreed on this count. I can't remember when I didn't know that "incongruent" meant "not the same".

Agreed also. "I believe", for me, means "I have this idea, but I could be wrong".

Well...individuals are free to, although we seem to be a little shy on unicorn-kin around these parts. But if you ever imply that it applies to the entire group or- as Archer said- anything even in that vicinity...well, barring actual physical violence, I'd probably go on a rant of some sort.

Re: Maybe the community is scaring off potential newcomers...
Believe doesn't imply anything religious to me. In fact, I am of the belief that nothing can ever truly be known, so even what we "know" we believe we know because we could never really proove that we know, not even to ourselves (if that makes any sense to you). Existance can't even be proven.
And there are varying levels and kinds of belief too. There's the "I believe I'll have the fish", the "I believe it'll be a good day to day", the belief you'll have that your loved one will not betray you, your belief in "fact", etc, etc, etc...
Religious belief is only one of a thousand options for the word in my mind.

Maybe use word "feel"?

"Oh look I have wings on my back!"
"So.., does it mean you can fly?"
"I- I don't know.."

Or just not bother? I'm kinda missing what the point is, what the issue is that people want to rectify.
