How did you realize you were an otherkin?
Most people that I've talked to just knew deep down that their traits weren't specifically human. Many have said that they realized they were an otherkin when they stopped trying to justify their traits using human terms and accepted that they probably weren't human. I was just wondering how all of you realized that you were otherkin. Did you just wake up one day and know that you were otherkin? Or, was there a meaningful or impactful event that caused you to embrace your otherkin identity? I'm new here and I'm very curious about other otherkin. I know, and have known for some time that I'm a fae. It started when I was younger. I used to prance around the school yard during recess pretending that I had wings while my classmates played tag and soccer. I had fae dreams almost everynight until I admitted to myself that I wasn't completely human. I then looked online to see if there was a term used to describe other people like me and I was so excited to find the otherkin community. I feel quite at home here. finally.

I'm glad you've found somewhere you feel comfy. ^^ Could you post an intro for us?

I didn't realise I was a therian in a sudden dramatic blockbuster way, I just went online one day, found the otherkin community and thought ~ oh, that's what it is. :3 I've always been a dog, I just haven't always had a name to put to it.

Re: How did you realize you were an otherkin?
Hey fairyDust, took the liberty of moving this over to the general forum rather than article (although I was excited for moment that someone had compiled an article based on realization methods commonly found amongst otherkin).

Me personally, it was a long and very drawn out process that I am still going through to this day. Furthermore from where I sit now, i think there are specific stages of it similar to the stages one goes through when facing a great loss (from denial to acceptance). In the beginning it was notions, dreams, thoughts, inconsequential things that never seemed to be more than a second thought until much later in the process when I looked back at them with an apparent "aha" moment.

Following this were more dreams and sometimes day dreams which at the time I worried might be bordering on obsessed delusion or wishful fanciful thinking. These began to expand in length, however they felt more realistic than a dream, and more at home. In a dream one may find rules or events that are alien outside of the dream, only seeming to make sense to the dreaming while within it, these seemed more like a recap of past events and continued, for the most part, to make sense after the dream was over. I had contact within these dreams with a being who felt incredibly familiar, and though his form was different every time, the presence was the same. I believe that this was another Angel who was working with me in my own mind's eye to push these visions in order to push my awakening.

Over a period of the next few years I opened up to a friend of mine who had previously made it known very privately that she had some knowledge of the occult. After expressing these visions and what I thought, she replied saying essentially, "Was wondering when you'd figure it out." She further explained seeing my wings and all the rest several times and having known for a while. My immediate reply was a cross between wide eyed young man's obsession and whimsy, which then turned the other direction of, "Am I just going crazy."

From then on I continued to mold my ideas and beliefs from those experiences, balancing them with the criticism of whether or not it was true, a result of psychosis, or the product of imagination. Throughout the years I can honestly say that I still ponder the same question, however I have grown to accept that I believe it is true, however will not count on it being true and live my life normally as possible.

The maximum effective range of an excuse is zero meters.

Re: How did you realize you were an otherkin?
I am not sure if I can articulate my response to this question very well. While I may associate with the term "otherkin" to foster communication, I do not consider the term to be detailed enough on the personal level to readily identify myself as such. It is in the same vein that I may refer to myself as an "Earthling" to those who are not of Earth -- I have never "realized" that I was an otherkin, just as I have never "realized" that I am an earthling -- it is simply an intrinsic quality which has since required terminology.

As far as realizing "what I am", I'm still in the dark as to specifics. The first stages to the change were... drastic, and I doubt I would have been able to ignore them or explain them away without gratuitous use of the insanity card. Curiously, I feel as though I were more "otherkin" then than I am now, most likely due to the incomplete state in which I was... a human with "it", "it" being a state that had been forced upon me as opposed to the intrinsic quality it is now.

That's pretty much exactly how I found out. I suddenly felt wings, thought they'd go away, then I felt two more that didn't go away, so I searched for information online...

Heh heh, what's funny to me is that at that stage of my life, which was a little while after I'd joined otherkin groups, I was pretty much 100% convinced that I was entirely human . . . but part of a multiple system that also involved a shadow. So seeing that I had some rather shadowy traits sorta made me

Replace tail with wings, basically. And other things.

I never really felt completely human, but when I was 10 I started feeling wings. I had pushed the idea back before, thought that maybe I was just too young to know and imagining things...but part of me felt I should look into it. The way I act, the way I think.....it seems completely different from everyone else I've met.

Re: How did you realize you were an otherkin?
I'm still doubtful of my sanity, frankly.

My story, and the story of this body, are somewhat different.
This body, from what I've been told, started out with an internal dialogue between two "voices" that were assumed to be two parts of the personality, used mainly for expedient problem solving. Several years later, a phantom body started to become noticeable and not in a nice way. Energy tendrils, extended torso, odd structures on the skull, large teeth and claws, and a tail became every day distractions. About three years after that, the two "voices" finally recognized that they were not the same person and started to explore their nature, how they got that way, etc and uncovered a few brief impressions of "memory". Contact was made with energy beings that seemed to be "relatives" to at least one of the people living in the body. During that time, I became self aware in the body. Since I have little, if any, memory of anything before that, the three of us started to investigate my origins and concluded that I was essentially a hodgepodge of energetic particles that one of the others had collected over a few thousand years.
During all this, the idea of otherkin and the search for a kintype was a long, back and forth, embarrassing process.
Since then, the two others have left this body, and I still experience the phantom body, which leads me to think that either the body has a neurological condition, the phantom body was always mine to begin with, or there was never any multiplicity to speak of, and I've suffered years of extreme dissociation.

In terms of how I identify as otherkin, I'm human, astero, dragon/dinosaur and canine all rolled into one.
