Goal of Magic
For those who are practicing magic, or energy work, why do you practice? What is your goal at the end of the day? How do you actively pursue this goal in your day to day life, and magical practices? Be honest .

Re: Goal of Magic
Curiosity, a fascination with shiny things that go Boom, and self-healing....which sometimes becomes more urgent after indulging in the first two.

...of course that's what everyone expects me to say. How about a deep love and appreciation for the world I live in? That last one is the one I get the most stubborn about.

Re: Goal of Magic
I just figure that practicing doesn't really do me much harm, and if any of the apocolypse theories are true, I'd rather know something. But yeah, it's mostly a way to amuse myself when I'm on long walks.

Re: Goal of Magic
Well, I use it mainly as protection from things that have tried to hurt me and my friends, as well as a way to burn off energy, and a form of curiosity. I'm always curious as to how much effort it takes to make something manifest quickly. I love that I can help my friends quickly when they are in need, and I use it generally to make my life less.. well harsh.

Re: Goal of Magic
I’m a bit of a pain when it comes to Sanitizers and disinfectants so when it comes to the practice of magic/magick/energy *insert verb here* I stick to purifying and cleansing type stuff. End result is that even if I hadn’t actually accomplished anything in reality it still provides a sense of calm/comfort/peace ect. Besides, I would be burning the candles, oils, and incense anyway so might as well get some meditative practice in while I’m at it.

I used to do more in high school but I wasn’t a fan of some of the things that came of it or could have been the result.

Re: Goal of Magic
For those who are practicing magic, or energy work,
why do you practice?
I honestly couldn't tell you why I started looking into it. I've always had an interest in the unseen world, the occult, mysticism, magic, heathenry, spiritualism, etc. As such "magic" and energywork (which for the most part is the same thing to me) fall in under my general interests. This is why I've studied and examined.
The reasons why I practice are a few. General curiocity is a factor as I experiment whith what I am capable of and what works. I play with my own limits and capabilities for the sake of learning better control over myself as well as trying to work out what I "can" do. I play with "what works" in order to better understand the limits of the external reality and the possibility of affecting it.

What is your goal at the end of the day?
You know I don't work on goals, but all in all I do think that better understanding of myself, my situation, my capabilities as well as the world around me are pretty much the active goals. That and getting to a point where I feel I can comfortably say that I "can" affect the world around me.

How do you actively pursue this goal in your day to day life, and magical practices?
I am very much aware of the fact that I don't do enough. I do read and contemplate and do little things here and there. I do think I might be hesitant for a fear of success almost as much as a fear of failure. I am trying to do "more" (you know I'm reading more) I want to set up somewhat of a schedule or something for me to work on this more actively but like I said. Even with all the reading I done I feel like an ignorant child in the company of people far more advanced than me ('specially when I talk to certain people) and this makes me feel a little intimitated. I don't feel too comfortable talking about my attempts at things because they're such small things and I am definately not advanced enough to try a lot of the things that others are doing and this slows me down a bit further. I know that these are personal issues but still, the way I see it, I'd raher go too slow and do things at my own pace, learning everything that I can from each tiny little exercise, than rush head on into creating servitors and casting complex spells and ending up with something that I didn't intend from the very first moment.

Re: Goal of Magic
For me it's very simple and very practical.

I'm trying to get in touch with some people who can't be emailed or called on the phone.

Pft, you just need the right telephone.

Sounds like a joke, but I know some folks who have working Spirit Phones. It's not something that physically or objectively calls Spirits, but rather a physical prop that they've trained themselves to use as a focus in Spirit communication, so by picking up the phone they "activate" that part of themselves, and can talk to them. At first I thought it was silly, but I had a friend with one talk to someone for me, and by what they told me, there was no doubt in my mind they were actually communicating with that entity.

Selcar Wrote:For those who are practicing magic, or energy work, why do you practice?

In the beginning, there were two sides of it. The side that it felt natural and I was just trying to figure out things with. And honestly, back in my ninth grade mind, there was a part of the glamour concept, that yeah, I could do magick and it would be awesome!

Really those were steps to get me on my path. Magick became a way to explain things in my life, that never made sense to me.

A large part of my practice is based on curiousity. It once was (and still is) seeing how far I can push reality. Usually I don't need the big workings, or turning of fate, but sometimes it's nice to remind myself that what I'm doing is real, and really push a boundary, and have some amazing result.

Also the curiousity of what does what. There are many magick systems, and somethings things aren't clear one what they to, so I like to experiment, and see what happens if you do something, repeatedly.

More importantly in the last few years, as I've matured, settled down, and calmed down, it's about two things: Abstract progress, and concrete progress. Abstractly, I'm trying to Return to my Self. In Thelemic terms, I'm looking to do my Will, in Western occult terms, I'm looking to do The Great Work, in Hindu terms I'm looking to do my Dharma, in Taoist I'm looking to be in Tao, in Jewish magick, I'm looking for K&C with my HGA.

Deep inside me, and everyone is a "true" me, a true self, a self that is hidden under all the garbage of this life, and every other life, and I'm trying to get back to being that Self, trying to perfect my mortal and immortal self.

That's abstract, but there is the concrete, or practical side of it too. All these things lead me to be more efficient in this world. The more intune I am with this Self, with my Dharma, the better I can move through my life, both externally and internally. I become more efficient in what I do, more adapted, more focused, more content.

Quote:What is your goal at the end of the day?

Again, to do my Dharma, but that includes sub-goals, which are surprisingly mundane, to have and do a good job, to have enough financial security to do what I need, to work toward owning my home, etc.

Quote:How do you actively pursue this goal in your day to day life, and magical practices? Be honest .

In my day-to-day life, I educate myself, a lot. I take a lot of side classes, lectures, I watch documentaries, and I read massive amounts of books, and most importantly, I experiment and practice, and find what works for me. The more I learn, the better I can operate, I can't be a healthy person without knowing how my body and mind work. I can't own a house if I don't know how the market works. etc.

Magickal practice wise, I do occasional workings directed at those aims, but it is a lot of daily practice.

Currently I'm slacking off, doing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and Middle Pillar each day. They are largely for experimental purposes. The Middle Pillar has a few things it is supposed to do, so I'm doing it daily to see if I can get those results. I know, that's not much of a practice daily, but I'm in a vacation mode.

When we first begin all things simply are.
As we grow all things are external.
As we learn all things are internal.
As we understand all things are not.
