I give piano performances over the summer, when I'm recovering from the last semester of university. Awhile back, my high school driver education teacher asked me if I'd come to her Methodist church the next Sunday and play something; they needed a musical feature, and the singer they'd requested for that week had fallen ill (sinuses, nasty stuff).
I was all for any opportunity to make pretty noise for a nave full of people, so I assembled some jazz arrangements of popular Christian hymns.
Come Sunday, it all goes off without a hitch; I'm basically the opening act. Once I finish playing and the small ovation ends, the teacher calls me over to find a seat in the pews for the rest of the service.
Then things got wacky. This little old lady sitting behind me makes a gasping-awe sound like "ohhhh!", and I feel tickling in the wings. I turn my head enough to get a glance behind me, and sure enough, there's a blind woman (i.e. carrying a white cane and wearing blackglasses), maybe 80 years old,
running her hands over my mid-left wing like it's as tangible as the staircase banisters or the back of the pew. The woman next to her is staring at the little old lady like she's possessed or something, because she's waving her hands around in the air.
I try not to laugh, and finally it's time to go forward for voluntary communion. As I walk toward the altar, the little lady leaves her cane in the pew, and she somehow manages to avoid running into anybody, and before I know it, she's riiiight behind me in the very long line to reach the altar.
At this point I'm half weirded-out.
She puts her hands on my shoulders from behind and leans over my left ear, and she whispers kinda' loudly, "Sometimes unknowing we walk in the presence of angels. It's been years since I could remember what fire looked like. Thank you for joining us today, Messenger."
Then she steps around me, unerringly grabs my hand, and kisses the back of it... and proceeds to cut ahead of me in the line for communion.
