Early Christianity
Here's something interesting.

I'm studying for history, and there's a quote about someone talking to people who were supposedly Christian.

''When asked if they were Christian, they said they had never heard of Christ.''

Could this be an indication that the old religion was still strong, or that they were only told a small bit of the religion? What do you guys think?

Depends - who were these people, and what's the source?

Re: Early Christianity
Yeah, need more information on this one.

If it was early early Christianity, there's also the problem that Christians were being persecuted. "Jesus? What Jesus?" would have been a survival measure.

They were Irish people, I'll post a link to the source if it's on the Internet somewhere.

Also, I also had Shaynin's thoughts, they could have said it to get out of trouble. It was in my history book but it isn't explained in any detail, it's just there.

Re: Early Christianity
We really need the "context" to make any comment on this what so ever.

Re: Early Christianity
Again yes, there would need to be context, but even so, I don't know that we could really say much about it.

It is also possible that the answer wasn't even a self-defense thing so much as a code, by saying a Denial specifically as "I've never heard of Christ" might have been a message to say that they actually were Christian to those "in the know"

When Ireland was being "christianized" what often happened was that the ruler converted and by extension the people. I'm sure you can imagine it took time to get the word out. The form of Christianity practiced in Ireland prior to Roman Catholicism making it to the island actually predates those conversions though. There were Christians in Ireland before people arrived to convert the masses, lol.
