DJ Conway
Not too long ago i read DJ Conway's two dragon magic books: "Dancing with Dragons" and "Mystical Dragon Magick." When i started the first one i hope it would help me find some insight into myself and was rather unfortunately disappointed. While there was nothing in it that seemed inherently wrong it just felt....off. It was very surprising just how underwhelmed i was by the experience. Then i read the second book, with lowered expectations. There were somethings in it i found valid but for the most part is read like utter fluff. Her depictions of dragons and the otherworld read like some bright and colorful imagining of reality the way Disney re-imagined, rather dark when you read the originals, fairy tales for their movies. (That is not to say i don't like Disney movies) My point here isn't to try to bring down her books but rather, having been rather disappointed by them myself, i would like to know if any other dragons have read either book and hear their thoughts and impressions.

Re: DJ Conway
I read her books. My opinion of them is about 60 expletives long. They are terrible. They are stupid. They are childish. They are full of lies. I'm not some magical astral dragon whathaveyou and *I* felt insulted by her "spells" that could have been better written by a napping 5 year old. She was outright condescending in some sections, and cloyingly cutesy in others.

Hate those books. Hate hate hate hate hate.

Re: DJ Conway
Well at least its not just me thinking this. That makes me feel a little better. I suppose I'll just have to write the next dragon magic book since I've never really found any others. Any one else read them? And while I'm at it, anyone know of any good dragon magic books at all?

Re: DJ Conway
And it's not just dragons that seem to have a problem with her books. A lot of people in the pagan communities loathe her books for the same reasons (albeit not dragon-specific).

Personally, it's been a long time since I picked up a magical book by DJ Conway. But I don't remember ever having a specific problem with her works, they're just really aimed for beginners. And like a lot of other pagan authors, you just need to take her books with a grain of salt, but they're not 100% horrible in my opinion. That, and they were one of my first introductions to nature religions so I can't hate them completely. <!-- sWink --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" /><!-- sWink -->

Re: DJ Conway
I'm pretty sure I've picked up Dancing with Dragons at a book store once. Quite frankly, I was amused. I knew that I had picked up a book for spellcasting, which I've never believed to be necessary in the first place, but the book went above and beyond even that idiocy. Of course, I don't remember it all that much about it, since it was just a passing moment.

Re: DJ Conway
I glanced at one of her books once and laughed out loud...it's utterly crap.

I left the store in giggles it was so funny to me.

Re: DJ Conway
Ew. Read and own both books, and I left a review of the second one on Amazon: Linky

Just like her other books, it just seems like a mish-mash of what she thinks would sell it, sprinkled with a bit of her own Unverified Personal Gnosis. I want to facepalm every time someone recommends it, but that would leave my face pretty sore.

Re: DJ Conway
Blah and BLEAURGH

She gives dragons a bad name.

The only book/thing I liked from her was "Animal Magick" and the "Fantastic Beast tarot" collab with Lisa Hunt (honestly, it was Hunt's amazing art that saved it...unfortunately the "Shapeshifter tarot" couldn't be saved the same way). "Animal Magick" was an ok intro to totemism, for 14 year olds at least. Not something I would take seriously as an adult or in more experienced work, but fine for a novice.

But all in all, toss her in the 101 bin with the rest of them.

Re: DJ Conway
I agree with all that's been said. Her books are not all horrible(just most of them) as there are small scattered pieces of useful info. I am certainly glad I've finally got some opinions from other dragons and kin. Now i know I'm not the other one to think this of her works. I haven't read any of her other books and if her dragon books are to judge i don't want to read her other books. However, I will give her points for at least trying. There is precious little good info written about us.
Thanks for all you input.

Re: DJ Conway
On the flip side....if one reads her books with a handful of salt and tweaks them in their own way, the rituals and symbolism can be useful for spellworks and the like (draconic wicca some call it).

But as far as pure fact goes, that's mostly in the first few chapters regarding the human history of dragons in terms of how they're seen in myths. The rest of the books are just stereotypical images she probably made up in her mind, or influenced by her mind.
