A cure for HIV found using stem cells...
A 42-year-old HIV patient with leukemia appears to have no detectable HIV in his blood and no symptoms after a stem cell transplant from a donor carrying a gene mutation that confers natural resistance to the virus that causes AIDS, according to a report published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

This is bloody amazing...

Also I noticed the board has no science section >.>

That's very interesting. I've heard about people with the natural immunity for some time, but it's pretty damn cool that it seems to have been transferred to a new host.

(Oh and thank the Maker there's no science forum. There are few things more embarrassing than watching otherkin try to get scientific!)

Good stuff! Professionals doing research to be published in peer reviewed journals . . . that's science.

Unfortunately a lot of otherkin seem to think that doing a survey of their mates and speculating about it counts as science.

Oh no I meant for discussion of peer reviewed hypotheses and the like, I tend to troll the hell out of people who try and pass musings without any validated examinations as science....I don't mean to, it's just driven by a force greater than you or I.

Ahh, if only the desire to stamp out bullshit was the strongest force in the universe. Alas, it is weak, and we must fight, fight, fight every moment of every day to keep it alive.

You should make a science board, I'd be more than happy to mod it.

Well, gravity is also a weak force and yet we're controlled by it <!-- sBig Grin --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- sBig Grin -->

So perhaps there's hope yet. But as another science major I do like the idea of a scientific/debate sort of board.

Re: A cure for HIV found using stem cells...
It's not that we don't understand science, it's just that we're too lazy to apply it to all aspects of everything. Why go to all that work unless there's something to gain? And in many otherkin-oriented areas, speculation is all you can expect to get. No one can scientifically prove that we're otherkin, nor can they prove that we aren't. So it's silly to try to measure air with a ruler.

Actually, I love science. I grew up watching Nova with my Dad with Carl Sagan. Science was the 'religion' of my household as I was growing up. I wish my Dad was alive today to see all the cool things they're doing with carbon nanotubes, from computing, to lab on a chip, to water desalinization and air purification. I need to buy stock in whichever company starts making them. Or to reopen speculations that Mars might not be a 'dead' planet afterall. The 'Goldilocks zone' is getting larger thanks to extremeophiles, but also seems narrower once you add in the need for an electromagnetic field and contemplate the necessity of having a large moon.

He's also the one who tried to 'scientifically' show me that I wasn't psychic, that it simply wasn't possible. He wasn't able to do it. Seems my erratic 'powers' chose those particular times to annoy him. I told him that I was good at 'guess a number games.' I told him I don't always pick the correct number, but I do often pick the winning number. So he immediately told me to pick a number between one and ten. I said the very first thing that popped into my head. He said I was wrong. I shrugged and moved on. A minute later he admitted that I didn't get the number he chose, but I did get the number that he was thinking about. I thought he was pretty silly for trying to screw with the results on purpose.

So basically all this 'prove it' scientific stuff is old news to me. It's not that I don't know how to do it, it's just that I believe its value is limited. It does wonders with the physical objective world, but it falls on its face when it comes to understanding subjective reality. One of the biggest problems with science today is that our subjective side hasn't kept up with the objective side. Our culture is unbalanced.

Science rocks--I plan on getting a degree in biological sciences, but only so I can work at a zoo.

Anyway...

That' really neat that that worked out.
